I am a third grade blended model teacher working in the heart of Harlem, New York City. I have the pleasure of working with some fantastic third graders. Each morning, whether online or in-person, my goal is to plan and think of creative lessons that will help them reach a higher academic level of learning. The community is very diverse and has a rich cultural identity amongst its residents. All of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch based on their family's income status.
At this present time, I have students who attend school in person and online.
I can honestly say, since this pandemic, my students are more caring, concern, and helpful towards one another. I have not had to reinforce many rules but only to stay six feet apart and wash their hands throughout the day. It has not been easy for a lot of my students.
As Christmas approaches during this pandemic, it makes me have so many mixed emotions; it brings a lot of gracefulness and sorrow. I would love to give my students Christmas gifts to make their journey each day seem somewhat familiar. We will not have a Christmas party in the usual way, but we can sit six feet apart and have snacks at their desks.
I want to give each child a gift to uplift their spirits during this difficult time.
Words can not express to see their faces light up with this simple gift to open and use to build up their hearts with joy. It has been challenging for them to miss out on many holidays and traditions that we take for granted. The students will use the baseball action game to re-enact a real live baseball game. The students in the class will use the dollhouse to role play and build on the vivid imaginations. Sadly, to say, students are not using their creativity because they are so worried about the events which are occurring worldwide. I truly believe each child's social-emotional well-being is so crucial and critical during this difficult time.
