Our school is a small PK-5th rural school. We have a student population of about 350 with over 84% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Our school also has the highest percentage (33% of the student population) of ELL students in the district.
It makes my heart happy to see kids reading and working hard on projects in my room.
I know all students have the ability to learn. My job is to encourage them to give 100% in everything they do regardless of their background.
My Project
This year while pursuing National Board Certification (I'll get my results in December) I was required to develop a unit. I chose to teach inferring through Van Allsburg's books. My students were eager to read Van Allsburg's books and developed a love for his books.
Read alouds are the best way to give all students access to text.
If you are not familiar with Chris Van Allburg's books they are a must read. Inferring is a difficult strategy for students to master. My students were very engaged when I read Van Allsburg's books. I need more of these books to make sure all student develop the strategy of inferring.
I had a parent send me a message this summer saying: Student "was thrilled at the book store when she saw Van Allsburg's book. She was so excited she called me (mom) Mrs. Kent."
I want every student to be overjoyed when they see a book we have read in class! This lets me know the student made a connection with the text
