Help me give my students easy access to quality, age-appropriate literature so that they not only read, but love reading. Probably the most exciting book in my cart is The Tripods Collection, a series to be devoured.
My students come from a wonderful area just north of a large metropolitin city. The city is full of historically-significant architecture and the neighborhoods are full of families who can trace generations back in the same town. Other families have made the choice to live in this quaint town with literally tree-lined streets and corner shops downtown. The town has just recently graduated from having one stop light to seven as businesses have recognized the area for the gem that it is.
My students are very hesitant to read assigned books in their English class.
In an effort to mitigate their hesitation, I would like to offer them more choices in the way of age-appropriate books. I want to see them excited about books, carrying them around to all of their classes. I want them to celebrate finishing an entire book on their own. I want them to catch a passion for reading. Doing so at the Jr. High level will pay huge dividends in high school, in college, and throughout their entire life as they navigate our advanced, but still verbal, world.
My Project
Having high-quality, age-appropriate literature in my classroom will not only encourage the students to read, but it will give them the ability to choose their own books. Being assigned a book to read often creates resentment in students and they decide to dislike a book before even opening the first page. Allowing the students to select their own reading material will encourage them to find subjects and authors that they find interesting which will increase their reading skills as they read more and more quickly.
As a child, my mother read to me and as I got older, she would give me books as gifts.
Christmas afternoon was always spent in my room with a new book. Allowing me to read at my level made me feel confident and successful. Allowing this same experience for my students will give them the confidence they need to level-up in reading year after year. Help me give these wonderful students positive reading experiences over and over again.
