They like to move, they love to read, they love the digital world, and love lots of positive attention.
Many of them are being raised in single parent households and they all receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I greet them with a warm hug and smile. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
Soft seats give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. Soft seats are much softer than the hard floor and maybe soft seats will give them more comfort while sitting during circle time and story time and maybe in their chairs.
Since implementing soft seats, several schools have noticed that:
• Their students' grades have improved.
• Their students seem happier and more engaged.
• Their students are participating more and having more invigorating conversations.
Giving Students a Choice in How They Learn makes them feel like they have control, causing them to take ownership of their learning. My kids can use the soft seats to stay in their personal space. They are constantly moving and all over the carpet. They do not understand personal space. This is keeping them from focusing and causing behavior issues. I think ownership of their own seat may create a better learning environment. Some of them, I believe do not find a comfortable spot and want to argue over spots to read. Maybe with different choices of soft seating will minimize this problem.
