Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at my school are known as the Husky Heroes. My 2nd graders are eager and energetic learners. I love their enthusiasm for learning! Most are low-income, English Language Learners. Unfortunately, a lot of these students have limited resources at home. School is the only time they have access to new literature or any literature at all. Even though they are eager to learn, they struggle with reading and get discouraged. I would like to create a motivating, fun environment that encourages them to read.
Many of my students have already started this school year telling me that they can't read.
They feel embarrassed and ashamed. I would like all my students to know that they have the ability to become excellent readers. Having a fun, exciting place to practice reading with exciting materials will really help encourage my students. I would love for each of my students to find their reading super power skills.
My Project
All the students in my class deserve the opportunity to grow and build self-confidence. I am asking for a creative, fun, learning environment that encourages the love of reading. During our ELA time block, we incorporate Universal Access Stations. At this time students are able to read on their own or partner read with a buddy. This daily extra reading time of leveled reading builds fluency skills in these young readers.
Our class would like to put together a camping area to read in.
They would love to have a fun new area (teepee, picnic table, camping chairs, Adjustable Bookcase, and Little Red Lady Bug area rug ) to read in with their friends. This would provide a new, fun experience for my students who have very little real life experiences. They would have a blast using the mini flashlights to track their reading. Having a new area to put old and new books will also be a bonus, considering our current bookcase is barely standing. Some requested new books include Hungry, Hungry Sharks, Fly Guy, Just Me and My Dad, Llama Llama Loves Camping, Pete the Cat, and Llama Llama Loves Camping.
My kiddos would go bonkers for this new reading spaces and tools! Please help them shine and expose their secret reading powers!
