I am fortunate to work with energetic students who want to learn. At my small, Title I school, a typical day finds us doing Language Arts in the morning and Math in the afternoon. At my school, 5th graders are the "big dogs" of the school. After they leave our building, it's on to Middle School! My teaching partners and I not only teach the grade level standards, but also do activities to mimic more of a middle school feel.
Our grade level is departmentalized to give the students a chance to change classes and experience more than one teacher for their academic needs.
My students are from varied backgrounds, but most of them have lived in the town where the school is for all their lives, as have the generations before them. They are energetic, motivated, and inquisitive. They participate in sports and other activities, both in and out of school. Many of my students are part of the school Leadership Team. They participate in the school Spelling Bee and Geography Bee, as well as the Science Fair.
My Project
In my class, I strive to create a caring classroom community. We focus on respect and responsibility in 5th grade. I also would like to emphasize the act of choosing to be intentionally kind. I am requesting a classroom set of RJ Palacio's novel, Wonder, for my project as it has kindness as one of its themes. We will read and discuss Wonder as a class. I'm sure Auggie and the other characters in the novel will prompt many interesting classroom discussions.
"When you have the choice between being right or being kind, always choose kind".
This line from the book really sums up what I want the students to learn and practice.
As we read the novel, I hope the idea of purposefully choosing to be kind will become my students' mindset.
