Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in an inclusion setting. My class consists of regular education students, in addition to students with varying needs such as hearing loss, developmental delays, autism and speech and language. We all strive to do our very best at supporting one another each and everyday! Our classroom community is full of loving and caring individuals!
My class of curious, energetic and active, six to seven year olds live in an urban setting where all receive free breakfast/lunches, and a majority are English Language Learners.
My Project
Children love The Elephant and Piggie picture book series! I am requesting nine books!
Some titles are "The Thank You Book", "My Friend Is Sad", "Waiting Is Not Easy", "Should I Share My Ice-cream?" "I Broke My Trunk" and "Can I Play Too?".
These specifically chosen books will model for children how to establish positive relationships with each other in a fun way. The choices that Elephant and Piggie make and the words they use will be discussed. Teaching empathy can start in first grade. Children need an example to learn from and the Elephant and Piggie books are the way to go! It models for children how to say thank you, share things, and make someone feel better. The watercolor pencils, blank books and assorted papers will provide an opportunity for children to write/illustrate books just like Elephant and Piggie! By creating laminated books, they can continuously share positive experiences with each other and at home with their families!
The supplies and fun Elephant and Piggie books will allow sharing of positive, authentic experiences and we can meet the needs of students academically, as well as socially!
