My students need stools, balance ball seats and Wobble cushions in their fidget friendly classroom where they are able to expand their learning experience in a comfortable, more developmentally appropriate way.
My elementary school is located in a small, rural community in North Carolina, with a small budget to match. This year I will have 22 inquisitive, young minds in my classroom, all of which have a strong desire to learn and are full of life. Most have never set foot in a structured setting, never had to follow rules or expectations, never had to sit still for a substantial period of time. I am the beginning of their educational journey.
My students come from various socioeconomic backgrounds and neighborhoods, and are very diverse in their academic needs.
A small number of them receive backpacks full of food from local donors to ensure their families are fed over the weekends.
My Project
Flexible seating is important because it gives children a choice in how they work and learn, and teaches them responsibility and independence. My goal isn't to replace traditional seating in my classroom, but rather add options for those students specifically who have difficulty keeping still.
Flexible seating is proven to be an effective way to increase focus and creativity, reduce anxiety, and offers students the freedom to release energy.
Using Wobble cushions, stools, and exercise balls as tools for learning will no doubt encourage student collaboration, be much more comfortable, and is way more fun to sit on than a regular chair!
