Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our diverse school population is nearly 1,600 students of which 80% qualify for free and reduced lunches under Title I funding. Most of our students are dedicated and driven to utilize every opportunity provided to help them prepare college and career readiness. With this comes providing novels that will allow them to be competitive with their peers at other schools. We have a very limited budget for our students and are dependent on grants and organizations like DonorsChoose.org to help our students gain access to curriculum.
Our teachers need new copies of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to use with their students.
Our students are using novels that are 20+ years old, tattered and are different versions. Because of this, our teachers struggle to effectively teach their students as the books are falling apart and they can't direct students to be on the same page (physically and metaphorically). Despite these drawbacks, our students perform highly on standardized tests and have above average course passing rates. However, if given newer books, our students can do that much more!
My Project

Our students want to learn, and they should be able to do so with the most up-to-date materials.
By providing new novels, our students can better learn the importance of the text as well as have the best materials to help them produce effective writing pieces.
