Help me give my students age appropriate materials that will help teach them life skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students have intellectual disabilities as well as other challenges including autism, cerebral palsy, and behavioral challenges. They follow an adapted curriculum and are then in a Transition Program that teaches them job skills, social skills, and life skills to help them learn to be as independent as possible as they prepare for their life after high school.
The students are learning life skills as well as how to use these skills in a safe fashion.
These skills include how to be a part of the school and community.
I love the joy that my students have for coming to school! They are excited to be a part of the campus community. They also enjoy learning skills their peers are a part of including learning to use email and go to school and community events such as football games, plays, and recreational opportunities.
This magazine subscription will give my students excellent age-appropriate reading articles about real life decisions and choices they will make. Articles address social/emotional learning, life skills, mental health, personal health, and digital citizenship. The subscription will include the magazine for the students as well as teacher materials such as lesson plans, skills sheets, quizzes, and videos.
The material is the same as their peers in the general education classroom would be exposed to.
This will challenge them to think on a higher level of learning. My team of special education teachers and assistants can then take the articles and videos and modify them to help the students understand the basics of the information. Many times, adapted materials are so simplified the students get bored. By exposing them to short articles about real challenges that teens face, they will be more engaged and motivated.
