My classroom is an alternative learning style for students who are not able to work in a traditional school setting. Most of our students work one-on-one for the majority of the time they are at school.
Our students don't fit in with traditional schools.
Many of our students have IEPs or are English Language Learners and are ages 14-22. Almost all of our students are drop-out recovery students who have life issues interfering with their education. We have homeless students, drop out students, and students who just need the one-on-one attention our school provides.
The goal for the Scholastic Magazine "Choices" is to help our students gain soft skills and learn to make better choices in their lives. Each morning, the students are asked to read an article and make connections to themselves or others they know in their lives. We have an online connection for some articles, but our students need to have a tactile option as well. Some of our IEP students need to underline and answer specific questions to get their background knowledge working for them.
These magazines will help both our IEP students and our English Language Learners by providing a common article for them to have in their hands and discuss openly with their peers to increase understanding.
It will also help students understand the world around them and the choices they can make to better their futures.
