Being able to give my students a choice whenever possible is very important to me. The ability of choice seating in our classroom has made a huge impact on the learning that takes places! This year I gave my students some alternate seating choices in our classroom. I was able to provide some stools, cushioned crates, bouncy bands for the legs of chairs, yoga balls, and also some bagel cushions for a floor seating options. It was such a positive experience, for both myself and my students, that I would like to provide more choice seating options in our classroom.
My Project
By giving students the choice to sit where they want every day, it allows them a sense of independence in deciding what is going to work best for them! Daily, my students are allowed to sit where they want. They currently have the choice of cushioned crates, yoga balls, stools, bagel cushions for floor seating, and traditional chairs. My students almost always make a good choice when choosing their seat for the day.
I think that my students are more engaged in their work and we experience less disruptions when they are given a choice of where to sit.
The choice seating that I have selected will provide my students with additional choices in their seating. The wobble stools are traditional height but will allow for some movement at the tables and desks. We currently have a few bagel cushions in the classroom and the kids love them! I would like to get a couple more for them to use when sitting at a low tables in the classroom. When I talked with my students about adding some more choice seating, they were very interested in adding some flat, balance disks! These are lightweight and can easily be transported around the classroom from floor seating to chair seating, giving the students some flexibility with their choice.
I have first-hand been able to witness how choice seating can positively affect both my students work and their engagement in our classroom! I am hoping that by providing the additional options, it will continue to positively influence their learning.
