Technically my students are those identified with disabilities affecting their ability to learn requiring extra support. These amazing students are included in a general education class with their non-disabled peers. The students grow in so many ways working together and supporting one another and I consider all of the students I see each day to be my students. My assigned students and I move from our little resource room to their general education homerooms throughout the day. Resource teachers like me are never sure of what grade level students they will teach each year. Last year I taught first and fifth graders and this year I will most likely have first, second and fifth graders. I find such joy being a part of each child's learning.
Students with educational challenges are often convinced they can't learn and may appear withdrawn in school, but working with them to find ways for them to achieve can spark a light within them that is so empowering.
When a strategy works for a student it is often like an on switch to them becoming the hardest working student in class, often not wanting to stop work as they begin to love learning.
My Project
Flexible seating options like ball chairs, bubble cushions and wobble stools excite students while also allowing them an outlet for their wiggles helping them to focus on assignments. Chair bands offer students a chance to move their feet quietly with some resistance to offer resistance to calm them without disturbing others. Classrooms are busy and sometimes noisy which is way too much sensory input for some students, so noise cancelling headphones, fidgets, and microbead pillows can soothe anxiety and enable learning.
When students are offered the option to leave their desk and work where they feel comfortable they are excited for the chance to work in their favorite spot on their favorite seat.
Using a fun flex desk or lap pillow for their laptop can melt away the stress of a writing assignment. Calm, comfy students are creative and engaged in learning.
