This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Flexible learning spaces offer students more control, ownership, and responsibility for improving their academic learning. Flexible learning zones correlate with the shift away from teacher-led instruction to student-centered learning. In a traditional classroom students sit in hard uncomfortable chairs for hours a day. An uncomfortable student is distracted, disruptive, and unproductive. A comfortable student is calm, focused, and productive.

Flexible learning spaces create a safe and shared community that fosters independence, choice, collaboration, communication, critical-thinking, and creativity.

Currently, my students are able to chose alternative seating during independent reading and think-pair and share activities using body pillows, bean bag chairs, sitting or laying under tables, and a video game rocker. However, I want to create a flexible learning zone accessible to every student throughout the whole instructional day. The products I selected will increase their options for comfort, collaboration, and learning styles. Children need to move, and flexible seating allows them to bounce, rock, stand, kneel, and fidget. Movement increases oxygen flow to the brain which increases alertness and focus.

Flexible learning zones are fun and increase student engagement which subsequently encourages intrinsic responsibility for their own learning. In a flexible learning space the classroom community is a shared space that encourages students to take turns, share supplies and space, learn patience, and learn to resolve conflict. Alternative seating makes learning accessible to all students no matter their learning style, while providing them an opportunity to create the most effective learning situation for themselves.
