I teach at a small 4th and 5th grade school; about half of our school is low income. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with 50% of our students receiving free lunch. We live in a military community in a small town where funds are limited.
My students are hardworking, determined overachievers who never fail to meet a challenge.
They have very big plans for their futures. When asked what they would like to do when they grow up, I hear responses such as become a cardiologist, marine biologist, Navy pilot, pediatric doctor, and ultrasound tech.
It is my goal to meet each student at his or her academic level and help them all reach their full potential.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed. Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused, and productive. An uncomfortable student is a distracted and unproductive student.
Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment.
Traditional desks can make students territorial or possessive over their space and supplies. Flexible seating encourages students to share both. And, it encourages them to take turns in different locations and with different seating options.
Flexible seating allows students to quickly and easily pair up, work in small groups, or discuss as a whole class. Flexible seating helps make learning fun.
