My Students

I teach English to enthusiastic 7th graders every day! My students' reading levels range from 3rd - 12th grade. Students are allowed to select their own books for independent reading.

Some kids beg to read longer than the allotted 15 - 20 minutes each day, and, of course, this makes a teacher's heart smile!

Many students say this is their favorite part of English class.

My Project

I am fortunate to have a collection of books on the shelves in my classroom from which my students can select based on interest. My classes are afforded 15-20 minutes a day to read independently the books they want to read.

This project can help me integrate small-group novel studies for a more balanced approach to literacy.

My colleague next-door has great success with implementing this differentiated reading instruction, and I am inspired to explore new strategies to meet the diverse needs of my students.

As small groups read the same novel, student-led discussions foster student independence and allow for collaboration and communication. Middle schoolers are masters at socializing, and this format allows them to talk to classmates while growing as readers.
