My 17 kindergartners are full of creativity and energy! Their absolute favorite thing to do is imagine, create and construct in our Makerspace area! These amazing children aren't just creative, they're doers and being a doer means our classroom is full of movement. With all that creating and doing we need a classroom that is conducive to their way of learning which is why this project needs your help! I plan to use flexible seating with this group of students to better meet their needs in the classroom.
The picture I included is what I'm hoping to achieve with your help.
There are so many benefits of flexible seating! Flexible seating will allow my students to feel empowered by having choice when it comes to where they want to sit from day to day. Flexible seating also guarantees my students are comfortable while they work which will boost morale and productivity. Research also shows that students benefit from the movement they have while they work. Eric Jensen, a former teacher and now a researcher and consultant, concluded in a 2000 report that a review of research shows physical activity benefits learning. “Movement increases heart rate and circulation, enhances spatial learning, provides a break, allows cognitive maturation, stimulates release of beneficial chemicals, counteracts excessive sitting, and affirms the value of implicit learning,” he reported. He suggests students move around regularly, as well as stand and sit in different postures, including squatting, perching and laying down.
The money you donate will help buy stools that will allow choice and movement which will increase focus and productivity.
I am asking for four stools and padded seat cushions. The money will also help supply an Echo Dot. The Echo Dot will not only help with movement in the classroom-by doing mindfulness activities and yoga- it will also be used for math centers (roll the dice, number generator, what's the weather? on top of many other ways. The options are endless when it comes to having an Echo in the classroom. These materials will be used everyday, throughout the whole day by my 17 students.
