Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an 8th grade algebra teacher at Oakland Unified School District. My middle school has 96% of students on free lunches. Students are predominately Latino/a or Black, but there are a few Asian Americans at the school at well.
As a new teacher at the school, I'm hoping to garner interest and diversity in Asian culture at my school. My goal is to start a Chinese Yo-Yo (or American Diabolo) extracurricular class in the afternoons. My school has an excellent after-school program, and a third of all students attended different sessions and classes last year. This year the principal hopes to attract half of all students to stay at school after academic classes end. Students usually walk home by themselves or with friends after school, and we're hoping to encourage more students to wait for parents to escort or pick them up close to 5PM to ensure better safety in a low-income neighborhood.
I've been teaching the Chinese Yo-Yo in Texas for the past 5 years. I've had a lot of great experiences and a lot of successes with my students there. If I receive the Chinese Yo-Yos, I plan to devote at least an hour a week into an extracurricular class for students. By the end of the semester, I hope to have my students proficient to a level that will allow them to showcase their talents and skills at the end-of-semester assembly in front of the school. To see examples of Chinese Yo-Yo performances, I recommend searching YouTube.com for some great videos so that you can see for yourself.
Chinese Yo-Yo is a cool and exciting form of artistic performance. It's a fun toy that involves a great deal of concentration, patience, and teamwork. As an Asian American teacher in a school of most Blacks and Latino/as, I also hope to use my experience and skill in the Chinese Yo-Yo to broaden my students' awareness of the world. Chinese Yo-Yo helped me gain confidence in myself when I was in middle school--showcasing such a unique form of art truly awes an audience. I want my students to have the same opportunities, and I can utilize my years of teaching experience offer them instruction in something few will ever learn.
