Every year the students in the kindergarten classes at Roy Cloud School learn about the cultural and historical significance of the Chinese lunar New Year. The children create paper dragons, Chinese scrolls and paper lanterns for the celebration. We add a major art project to the teachings by creating several life size lion heads to lead a parade. The lions ensure good health and luck. A dancing dragon ends the parade and signifies prosperity for the New Year. We culminate the project with a Chinese New Year parade around the entire campus. This has been a school tradition for 15 years. In the past, I have taken children down to see the making of the San Francisco Chinese New Year floats. We were selected to participate in the year 2000 parade, the year of the dragon. Each year we try to bring in presenters who share authentic items and stories about the Chinese parade. These projects and activities help expose the children to diverse cultures, history, and art. Roy Cloud Schoo is a public k-8 school in Redwood City, CA. I am requesting funds for an authentic Chinese lion head to lead our parade.
