I teach English, Social Studies and Science to a self-contained 6th grade class at Ditmas J.H.S. where most of the students come from low-income households. We will study ancient cultures in Social Studies, focusing on China in January. I would like to celebrate Chinese New Year (Jan. 29 this year) by enjoying lunch from a local Chinese restaurant. This will be a culminating activity, with students creating decorations(lanterns, dragons, calligraphy panels)to prepare for the new year. Students will research the significance of the Chinese year in which they were born and study Chinese art. Since Chinese New Year falls on a Sunday this year, we will celebrate on either the Friday before or the Monday after.
