My Students

The majority of my students are English language learners from low-income, immigrant families who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. They live in small, one-room apartments with shared kitchens and bathrooms. Most of my students are cared for by their grandparents because their parents are too busy making a living. Some even need to work two jobs to make ends meet.

In spite of these hardships, these wonderful students come to school eager to learn!

Although their parents expect them to do well in school, most of the parents feel they cannot help their children with their schooling because of their long work hours and their own limited English speaking skills.

My Project

Chinese is difficult to learn. Most of my students hate learning Chinese because it is boring and difficult and they can't read anything. The textbook is scary with pages and pages of characters they don't recognize.

Help bring cool Chinese comics into my classroom to motivate my students to learn Chinese.

Get them inspired with fun graphic novels with great plots. The pictures make learning Chinese less intimidating and more fun.

I want my students to keep their native language so they can continue to communicate with their grandparents and parents. I want them to become multilingual so that they can be prepared to contribute to the world.
