Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The French Club at my high school created the Big Brother Big Sister program with Haines Elementary School in Chinatown 18 years ago. When we started, the school was primarily Latino; today the ethnic diversity is reflected with the increase of students coming from Ukranian Village, Chinatown, and Rogers Park. The purpose was for our high school students to "adopt" newly arrived bilingual kindergarteners and introduce them to American culture through holiday cards and greetings, visiting them at Christmas dressed in Santa hats and bearing gifts and touring Chinatown with them. Then, they would visit Lake View and be treated to hot dogs and pizza, play time in our gym, story time in the library, and/or a children video. The reward for our students is that they feel good about themselves that they have helped children become exposed to a new culture; today this is called community service. The benefit for my students is they get out of their Lake View and home environment and learn about another community.
I am the foreign language department chairperson and the French teacher. I started the Asian Club two years ago when some of these "little brothers & sisters" remembered their good experiences and decided to travel to our school for high school. They are now involved with the Big Brother Big Sister program.
On May 13th we will host the children. Expenses for activities have increased. I am requesting that you help us with a box of crayons, coloring books, a reader, and the Bubbles Bubbles for each Haines child. This on-going project is important for my students to realize they need to think about others. I do not have enough money in the club funds to pay for so much material anymore, and I don't want my kids to have to pay extra. They are already paying for lunch (pizza) and a small gift.
I appreciate any assistance I can get. Thank you.
