Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class of energetic third graders have imaginations that extend well beyond their South Bronx neighborhood… I am inundated daily with questions about animals, technology, space, and countries around the world (to name only a few). At the same time as their brains are brimming with questions, most of my students are finally transitioning from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” That's where you come in: a variety of children's encyclopedias will be an invaluable resource for my room of budding scholars!
I am channeling my kids' enthusiasm for exploration by teaching them research skills this year. I have taught them about using multiple sources, asking good research questions, and sharing what they have learned in “perfect paragraphs.” In November, each of my students chose an animal to research and produced a three paragraph report describing the animal's environment, eating habits, and special characteristics. My students were thrilled with the freedom to choose their own animal and excited as they pored over the books I checked out from the local library for them. However, the research was overwhelming for many children without encyclopedias, which would have given them a clear starting point to find out more.
Encyclopedias are excellent resources, and my kids are at the perfect age to learn how to use these valuable books. However, the only set of encyclopedias in my school is an incomplete, dusty, adult set in a sixth grade room. My third graders need encyclopedias that are written on their level and provide many pictures to further explain concepts. I am requesting a variety of children's encyclopedias on both primary and intermediate reading levels, to make them accessible to all of my levels of readers. Some of the encyclopedias are general and some are specific to animals, science, dinosaurs, etc. With your help, my third graders can not only find the answers to their daily wonderings, but can also grow into great researchers and explorers! Thank you for your consideration!
