The fifth graders at Queens Creek Elementary School, in Swansboro, NC, are in desperate need of age appropriate dictionaries to help with spelling, grammar and vocabulary. As a first year teacher, one of the areas with which I struggle in helping my students is in their spelling. I have tried to help my students as best I can through reading and writing to deepen their understanding of spelling, grammar and vocabulary. However, I can only go so far with reading and writing. Without dictionaries, the words are just letters, with no meaning. To my students, it must be like reading an unfamiliar foreign language. I have chosen the McGraw-Hill Children's Dictionary as my wishful item for a few reasons. First of all, they are great dictionaries. This dictionary provides students with age appropriate words, gives them pictures to help attach the word to an experience and also gives examples of the words use in age appropriate sentences. Second, as a teacher with limited resources, I have been able to purchase two for my classroom already. This shows they are economical. This is a resource the students and I both agree as being a treasured part of our classroom. I am asking for 30 more dictionaries so the entire fifth grade can utilize this resource. I believe it is important for all students to have access to the same materials, eliminating grey area from classroom to classroom. Won't you please help our dream come true of learning about our world through words?
