Books are awesome, aren’t they? They open a whole new world of imagination, letting the reader travel to a distant land or accomplish worldly feats without leaving the comfort of their home. They also teach important life lessons!
Over 80% of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Many of these children don't have access to the selection of reading materials that children from more affluent families take for granted. Our children have a great hunger for knowledge, but often lack the materials to fulfill this appetite.
My Project
In honor of International Literacy Day we selected a collection of quirky, colorful children’s books that are ingrained with fundamental values for every child to discover and enjoy. Our plan is to read aloud these stories with the support of our school counselors during our literacy block and have children focus on the lesson learned by the main character. Whether the book is about honesty, friendship, respect, understanding, or responsibility, we believe there is a life lesson to be learned by the students. After each read aloud, I'll be asking students to think about how these values are shown in their daily lives. While we know all children will benefit from these stories, we know that children with special needs will truly experience the biggest return. Often children with social and emotional issues struggle with basic concepts of friendship and can make growth by processing concepts with a large group.
There is no better way to promote positive values among students than to share a story.
I look forward to shaping positive behaviors through a look at a collection of wonderful books!
