This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students come from low-income, inner-city homes. We are a Title I school, and 92% of the students receive free or reduced rates for textbooks and meals. Two-thirds of our students arrive at school by bus. They do not have many extras at home - not even a car to get to and from school when there is an emergency.
My students are sweet, respectful, responsible, happy and curious students who love to explore the endless possibilities in our classrooms.
My students come to school daily ready to learn.
My Project
The art-themed books I am requesting will allow the students to learn about famous artists through reading. These titles include Art From Her Heart: Folk Artist Clementine Hunter, A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin and Jake Makes a World: Jacob Lawrence, A Young Artist in Harlem and more. The students will be able to sit in a quiet area of the art room and read about the childhood or life of an artist. They will read child-related stories about how the artist grew up and what type of art the artist made. Some of the books have characters jumping into the frames of famous artwork the authors explain the artwork in a child-friendly way. The books will be read by the students for years to come.
Having a book library in the art room will help my students improve on reading fluency, comprehension, and imagination while in art class.
Students will learn that reading can be fun in the art room. They will be able to read about the artist and how to create, paint or draw something new with the use of the books.
