Children Need Nonfiction Text To Succeed With Common Core!
My students need 6 copies each of 6 nonfiction exemplar texts, such as "From Seed to Plant" and "Bat Loves the Night," to read in order to continue to make progress with the change to Common Core State Standards!
Do you know the challenges that face students with disabilities because of the adoption of the Common Core State Standards? There is a huge push for nonfiction text which are almost always more difficult to read, so if I can start introducing my students to it now, they'll be set up better.
My school is in a large urban school district with high poverty.
It is now the largest school district in Indiana. My school has around 500 students. My students are fantastic. I currently have 27 students between the grades K-5. The majority of my students are currently in 3-5. I have a range of exceptionalities within my student base; everything from Mild Mental Disability, Other Health Impairment, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. My students struggle with many different aspects of school not just their academics.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting are small group sets of non-fiction texts. I have chosen texts that are Common Core exemplar text because they were chosen to be the est books for students to read. They are at a level that my students can find success at reading independently or in small group.
This project is important for me because it benefits my students.
My students struggle with the Indiana State Standards right now and when we switch to the Common Core Standards, I have to make sure that they are introduced to good examples of nonfiction text that will continue to build their skills.
