Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A quality education encompasses so much more than reading, history, science, and math. Students deserve to experience art, music, and dance in the classroom as other avenues of self-expression and creative thinking.
I teach fourth grade at Ralph J. Bunche Elementary School in Compton, California. Our school is a Title I School in which 100% of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Our student body is half African-American and half Latino. We are also proud to be a Title I Achievement School and, most recently, a California Distinguished School.
Unfortunately, our school does not have the resources to provide for teachers or materials in the arts. The Los Angeles Music Center, however, serves as a fabulous resource for schools seeking to provide students with art and music workshops on a periodic basis. The funds requested in this proposal would provide a three-day workshop for each of our fourth grade classes as well as one fifth grade class. We plan to invite an artist who will provide an introduction to the music and culture of Ghana, West Africa, and teach concepts of dynamics, tempo, and rhythm.
I cannot even express to you how much joy and knowledge my students will surely gain from experiencing a music education, even if it appears only as a 3-day workshop. Art and music should constitute a vital part of any well-rounded education, and I thank you for providing this missing piece for my students. You are truly making a huge difference in our classroom.
Thank you for your care and generosity.
