As a child, do you remember being asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" The children I teach have the extraordinary opportunity to succeed in professions that weren't even in existence years ago.
Many of the fifth grade students I teach are not familiar with the gamut of professional opportunities that await.
They are wonderful young learners who deserve enticing, up-to-date books regarding today's professions in various industries. My students need to have the chance to become knowledgeable in careers that are available for them.
My Project
Pennsylvania has newly implemented "Career Education and Work Standards." Among many educational advantages, career education will allow students to begin a career portfolio and gain insight on careers that best "fit" students' individual interests and abilities. Students will learn about the training, the education, and other requirements needed in preparation for the professional career they may one day choose.
The Pennsylvania Department of Education has many resources that will be used by my students, but ONE crucial component needed is books about careers.
If the students had a library of various career books in my classroom, research would be within reach.
One book--just one book--about a career may envelope a child's imagination and perhaps change his or her perception about what he or she could become. It would be an honor to have that student come back to me years from now and say, "I read that book in your class about ____________, and because of that, I am who I am today."
