My students need salt and gloves to mummify chickens as part of our Ancient Egypt Social Studies curriculum. We will be removing the guts and placing organs into jars.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are bright, enthusiastic learners and are curious about the world.
They especially love hands-on activities that engage them in the material and give them a better understanding of the subject matter.
My students have shown a great interest in different cultures and traditions and are excited about learning about Ancient Egypt. This is why we will be mummifying chickens in our class! They ask me about this activity every single day. Please help them live the dream of mummifying a chicken!
My Project
These resources will help to give my students an unforgettable experience. Ever since I told them about this project they ask me about it daily. The materials will be used to give students the opportunity to mummify a chicken (purchased from a local grocery store). Using tubs, zip-lock bags, rubber gloves, paper towels, salt, and baking soda, each class period will have the unique experience of mummifying a chicken. Students will use salt to dry and preserve the chicken. Students will also regularly check in on the mummification process by weighing the chicken, noting change over time, and adding salt as needed. At the end of the unit, each class period will have their very own chicken mummy and will have learned not only a crucial ancient Egyptian cultural practice, but also a fun lesson in science!
Allow my students to experience the wonders of ancient Egyptians in this hands on lesson.
Sometimes, trying to learn from textbooks can be detached and no where near as exciting as a real hands on learning experience.
