My students need books to read and check out of the classroom library to enrich their academics at home such as emergent readers, multicultural fairy tales and science titles.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Kindergarten isn't just playtime anymore! My students are required to read to enter 1st Grade. Many of them enter Kindergarten with no experience in reading and some even have to be taught how to correctly hold a book. Please help me inspire them to develop a long-lasting love of reading.
My students come from low-income homes and for many of them English is their second language. They just don't have access to books at home and often times no one is reading to them on a regular basis. They are voracious in their appetites for more and more stories and I would like to be able to fill that need with interesting and motivating stories. There is nothing like looking out into a field of 24 five-year-olds who are just enthralled by an adventure or smiling at a character's antics.
I record books on tape and send them home with the students to listen to on a Walkman. That way, no matter what, they can hear someone reading a story to them every night. Following along with the text makes them better readers. We will use the emergent readers for the struggling students to practice on their level. The stories from other cultures would be used to compare and contrast with their own traditions and experiences. I also like for the kids to be able to see themselves in the stories and try to offer a wide range of cultural choices. We do author studies on spectacular artists like Patricia Palacco during the year and would love to incorporate those into our library. There is also a bundle of books on "Strong Women" which I hope will inspire and empower our young girls to see a future that is possible for them regardless of their obstacles.
Your kind gift will help me give my students not only a foundation in reading skills; but they will also hopefully find such delight in the lives of the characters that they become inspired to read more and more and maybe someday even write stories for their own children to enjoy.
