My students need more high-interest books, and an egg incubator for a more hands on and engaging way to approach 5th grade life science.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am in a small Denver Metro school district. My students are all in either 4th or 5th grade. My students are AMAZING, and are definitely working hard to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. My focus is on helping them think globally, and giving them access to ideas and concepts that they would not normally have. I read "Red Glass" by Laura Resau, and was amazed at the empathy and inferences they were able to draw on.
This year, my class REALLY enjoyed being pen-palls with students around the world, and thinking about the places they would go if they could go anywhere in the world.
The books I have chosen are books that will allow the to read about "other" people and engage in higher order thinking while increasing literacy skills. would love it if my students had access to books more representative of themselves, as well as other diverse communities and high interest texts.
I want to enrich my science curriculum, and am looking to incorporate more PBL experiences for my students. They are great at researching and reporting, but struggle to understand why science is relevant to them today.
My Project
5th grade science has a huge focus on the form and function of systems. Hatching chicks, while learning all about the form and function of the various body systems will make for an engaging science unit (I have a plan for the chicks once they are hatched, so that is not a worry).
Students will create a PBL project by designing a chicken coop, and reporting on the price, area, and perimeter of the coop.
This project will increase student engagement, as well as give them a hands on, real world application for the math and science standards.
The books are for my classroom library, as being a first year teacher means that I do not have many..YET!
