In my 6th and 7th, and 8th grade Social Studies classroom, you will see a mosaic, as we have students representing many cultures, ethnicities, languages, religions, and customs. Students come to class with a positive attitude and ready to learn. In my classroom, every student is unique and is valued and heard. Students in my class know that they can learn in the way that works best for them, and they truly have a voice.
At my school, we value the rich diversity of our students, parents, faculty, and staff to create a strong community, dedicated to preparing students for college and the world.
In my classroom, specifically, mindfulness, and daily community circles work to strengthen relationships and provide a safe and welcoming environment where children can learn.
I would like to go to the 2018 National Council for the Social Studies Conference in Chicago, to learn, share, and network with over 3,500 social studies professionals.
The theme of this year’s conference is, “Yesterday - Today - Tomorrow: Building the Future of Social Studies, which connects to many aspects of our school priorities.
Specifically, I look at Priority #1, when thinking about the connections and collaboration that will happen at the conference. I also think about Priority #2, with the emphasis on civil discourse. We must prepare our students to be critical thinkers by having student discussions.
I look forward to experiencing innovative research and practice across all social studies disciplines through session workshops, intensive clinics, regional tours, and special events.
