This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a therapist traveling between schools in a low income/high poverty district, I hear and see many of the difficulties my students face on a daily basis. Many come from single or split parent families, and some with heart wrenching backgrounds. Not to mention being stuck in the middle of a water crisis. My students attend a district with significant needs; one that provides free food and water, and one that is also very limited in resources.
My students inspire me daily; they are FUN, creative, and sometimes challenging, yet they are always determined to beat the odds.
My students range from preschool to sixth grade, and have a wide range needs and abilities. They are students with autism, ADHD, physical disabilities, mental health difficulties. Some need sensory modulating techniques to improve focus and time on task in the classroom, while others require modifications to written work and/or classroom environment. Still others need tools to help them improve ability to regulate emotion.
These are my students, my students with special needs. They give my life greater meaning, and warm my heart every. single.
My Project
The selected chewelry and fidgets are a more maintstream friendly option for my general education students. Each item will help my students fit in without standing out, and most are wearable so they won't get lost! In addition, they will help increase ability to remain engaged, therefore increasing time on task in and out of the classroom. The foot roller helps decrease time out of seat and gives wiggly legs an option that is quiet and functional. The pencil fidgets and chews are portable and provide a different option for students who do not seek the traditional fidget.
The items selected will help with promoting success and progress while at school.
