Today's world includes new types of careers in the applied math and sciences. Our students are faced with the challenge of adapting to this change in thinking, if they are to be successful in their future careers.
My students are ambitious and eager to learn.
In our classroom, we have a math lab of critical thinking puzzles and games that push students of all levels. We promote and practice turning our thinking into written pieces that test our understanding and enable others to hear and see that there can be more than one way to reach the same solution. Students at our school come from many different backgrounds and have a variety of life experiences. In our classroom, we have built a community of learners that are willing to make mistakes by trying and also learning from others.
My Project
To build academic language, students can listen to arguments of others, decide whether they make sense, and ask useful questions to clarify or improve the arguments. Students are already sharing their thoughts during class discussions that involve adding and subtracting mentally and using place value blocks to represent values. I would like my students to explain their thinking to define multiplication, find equivalent fractions, explain logical reasoning puzzles, and articulate their number sense. I will use the Apple iPod to video record each student explaining this thinking. Other students will then listen to and watch their classmates explanation at the 6-station listening center and use a journal to record their questions for classmates. They will then be prepared to come back in a class discussion. Thanks to CHEVRON, I can recognize the importance of STEM Education to the future as my students practice mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and communication.
Students in today's world must be ready to compete in the job market when they are of age.
We have to start now in teaching and appreciating critical thinking and problem solving, as students from other countries have been learning in this manner already. Please give our students the opportunity to practice and recognize the importance of explaining their thinking through listening to and watching themselves and their classmates go through the process.
