I teach a group of inquisitive and active first graders in a public school in San Ramon, California. These students work hard every day to build their foundations in education that will take them through their primary years and beyond. They are learning to read, write and answer their own questions with dedication.
Our classroom is constantly abuzz with the joy of making discoveries of all kinds, from decoding new words, to solving questions about the world around us.
Each student in my class comes with a different set of background knowledge, interests and learning needs. We work every day to remove any barriers they may have to accessing their education and to ensure each student cherishes their primary years. These inquiring first graders deserve a rigorous and supportive setting to form their ideas!
My Project
My group of first graders are active and excited to be at school to learn. They need new seating options outside of traditional chairs to engage their moving bodies and ensure their success in the classroom. For example, it can be a challenge for them to become creative writers when their bodies are sprawled across their desks from non-engaged cores. In our room currently, every student has access to carpet spots, low tables with cushions, low chairs and pillows to support their need for choice and movement. We have a few flexible seating options for at their desk, including wobble stools and cushions and are hoping to reach more students every day with this project. By adding more Wobble Stools and expanding to Bounce Bands, a wider variety of students will be supported. Not all students feel comfortable with each seating choice, but have found comfort in one.
Our classroom barrier to supporting these growing learners is a lack of options for active seating while they work at their desks.
Some students need small intervention tools like the bounce bands just to keep their feet engaged. Other students need more active options like the wobble stools to engage their whole body.
As students get used to working with these supplies, more and more of them feel their bodies work best when they have access to flexible seating. However, with our limited resources and 26 active bodies, students get to use the materials infrequently. We have had success in the past with implementing these tools by borrowing supplies from other teachers and would like to add more options, including wobble stools and bouncy cushions, to our classroom on a permanent basis for our students!
