How fluently can you read a crocheting manual or a mechanical engineering textbook? How frustrated would you be if you were tested on a book you cannot read? The best way to teach our kids to read is to pair them with books that are at their instructional or independent reading level.
I teach a kindergarten class in California composed of 27 five and six-year olds.
Despite many rounds of funding cuts, we've been able to continue to provide an excellent educational foundation for these children through fundraising, PTA donations, creative programming, and technology to reduce administrative overhead. Even with all of our efforts, there are resources we still need.
My Project
I have requested a number of leveled reading sets. Students can build their fluency and comprehension skills when they read books that are at their target level, allowing them to concentrate on comprehension instead of struggling with unknown words. Leveled books allow students to read and comprehend various types of texts, exposing them to information and vocabulary they can understand, allowing students to gain background knowledge that will help them to move on to higher level texts.
One of the big milestones of kindergarten is learning to read.
And the best way to do that is by providing students with leveled reading materials. Help me foster a life-long love of reading!
