Many of my students struggle with the daily task of existing in a society that doesn't understand them. My students are curious learners that come from broken homes or have some type of learning disability. They want to be understood and are eager to please when given the opportunity to shine. Even though they might not always act typically; they are still just kids just trying to get past all the staring and loud noises this world throws at them.
Life science is a hard subject to teach to children that hardly get out of their homes. My students rarely get the opportunity to experience other cultures or even travel out of the state. I want to give my students the ability to travel to those places through different forms of media. I am requesting Nursey Rhyme books from multiple cultures so the kids can see how similar and dissimilar they are to our own. Character magnets for the kids to compare with our own ABCs. Different Bilingual picture books so even if the kids cannot read the foreign language they can at least get an understanding of meaning. Books about different cultures are important at such a young age. I want my students to see that kids can be just like them from all around the world.
The old school View-Master and the newest edition will send my kiddos on visual trips around the globe.
I'm requesting Wildlife Reels, Destinations, National Geographic, and a boxed set for them to decide. Because even if they cannot leave the state currently they can at least dream of a future in which they can.
I am also asking for several different Mellissa & Doug chunky wooded puzzle sets for the kids to explore and learn with. A long with some highlighters and notebooks. That they can use to write or draw anything exciting they've seen about on their world adventures.
