Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every Friday my students have game time. I have noticed week after week that many of my kids fight over the few dollar store chess sets that I own. One day I noticed a beautiful chess set in my friend Sheri's classroom. We had a discussion about how awesome a game chess is and how much it can teach children. She reminded me of a movie called "Searching for Bobby Fischer" and how chess changed Bobby's life. I decided to show my class that movie and their interest in chess grew even more! Watching my students get so excited about something that didn't involve fighting or video games was all I needed to become inspired to write this proposal. What I would like to provide my students with would be weekly chess game time where they will be able to play against each other using their logic, patience and ability to follow rules. It would be amazing if they could play with nice chess sets.
Currently I am teaching 4th grade for Chicago Public Schools. The area I teach in has provided me with many learning experiences. My school's population is 95% Hispanic, most students coming from non English speaking homes. In addition, my school has a 98% free lunch population. The students who attend this school come from very challenging home life.
The materials that I am requesting in this proposal include 30 chess sets (weighted), boards + bags, 30 copies of "101 Questions on How to Play Chess?, 30 copies of "Checkmate! My First Chess Book", and finally a copy of the DVD "Searching for Bobby Fischer". This would be for my class of 27. I am also hoping that once the students learn the game better they will be able to teach and share materials with other classes.
I realize this is a huge favor to ask for, but the excitement my students get from playing chess lets me know it's all worth it. I am hopeful that as they become more interested in chess they will make it a permanent hobby of theirs. I hope that you are able to see the value of this game the way my students and I do. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal!
