I am setting up a chess club with a fellow teacher. The students are allowed to choose their own clubs. I have had several students talk about the chess club with great enthusiasm. I teach sixth, seventh, and eighth grade math. I can see the advantage of the chess club to my classes. It will help the students to think things through logically, learn to plan, see patterns, use strategy, and compete, etc. The materials that I need are simply the chess sets. We would like to have 25 sets so that all students can compete at the same time. I think chess is a wonderful way for students to learn math skills!
