My students need opportunities to expand their horizons. 6 Chess sets and 4 ukuleles are fun, safe, low-cost, and build lifelong skills.
Chess and ukuleles are fun, engaging and a low-cost form of entertainment. The skills students develop with chess and ukuleles help them build self-esteem, develop higher order thinking skills, and connect with people beyond their own generation, culture, or geographic area.
My students are great.
They are largely resource-poor, but they are rich in spirit. Although they do not have a lot of exposure to many things that we take for granted, they are open to learning and they learn very quickly.
It's my honor to teach them and share what I know with them. They make me proud as they learn and teach each other.
The six chess sets I have requested are durable, so they will last for many semesters and years. With this resource, I will be able to build the aforementioned skills in hundreds of students. Students will learn that chess is fun, and a nearly cost-less form of entertainment. Unlike television and video games, chess develops students' minds.
Ukuleles are so much fun, and it is amazing to see students pick out Frere Jacques or Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star after a few minutes. It builds their self-confidence, teaches them some fundamentals of music, and encourages them to be creative and try new things. I have requested four ukuleles. A ukulele is relatively inexpensive and the benefits it gives the student are boundless.
My students do not have a lot of people in their lives that can teach them how to play chess or the ukulele.
Also, the neighborhoods where many of my students live in can be very dangerous.
Going out to play carries risks. Chess and music are safe activities that enrich their lives. This enrichment is critical because these students do not have many opportunities to learn these type of activities.
Thank you in advance for your support.
