Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school in New York where 95 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. As a teacher in a low socioeconomic school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.
My students need interactive learning experiences to help them learn and reinforce important mathematical concepts and critical thinking skills.
Many of my students struggle with focusing. I need to use activities that will engage them while learning. My students thrive on creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My Project
Chess has dramatically increased my students critical thinking skills, problem solving analysis of situations and has enhanced the learning process within my classroom. By providing my students chess timers it will enable them to keep track of the total time each player takes for his or her own moves. This will help them be accountable for their time within the class room setting.
The unlimited possibilities of moves in chess is an essential skill set within today's world of collaborative learning.
The connections between chess and math involves numerous calculations as well as higher order thinking involving prediction, planning, and analysis that is a crucial aspect within the mathematics class room.
