Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students all come from very diverse backgrounds. We are a Title I school, and most of my students are English language learners and receive free or reduced-price lunch. They are the best students that I've ever had the privilege to work with.
My students have a love of knowledge, and it's great to see them perk up and ask questions during lessons.
They are especially interested in science, and more specifically astronomy. Since our astronomy unit ended, I have students regularly text me questions about the Universe, and give me updates to current research that they have learned.
Aside from academics, they are such a fun-loving group of individuals and really seem to have bonded as a cohort. They are so supportive of one another and regularly step away from their own work to help others in the class. It truly gives me hope.
My Project
I have been teaching beginning chess for 12 years, and have never found an easier and less stressful way to get my students to play a round of chess than this card game; it makes chess stress free.
What my students love about the game is that it takes away the stress of not knowing chess strategies, and which piece to move when.
I use these Winners Chess Cards Set for Kids decks to help the students play a round of chess without the fear or stigma of losing.
I have found that after my students learn how to play chess, they become more contemplative in other areas of the classroom. It's really neat to see them play and discuss strategies with one another.
