My students need ten tournament style chess sets to accommodate twenty players. To add to the chess sets a couple of chess clocks and score books would help get our new chess club started.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school has strong athletic programs, but it lacks much to choose from in non-sport activities. The majority of our students are not involved in sports. Even so, many of them desire an organized activity to quench their thirst for learning and social interaction.
We are a Title I public school with 100 percent of the student body on free breakfast and lunch.
We are faced with numerous challenges not only academically but socially as well. The students are anxious to learn and participate in numerous activities.
My Project
The addition of a Chess Club at our school would be of great benefit to all involved. It has been demonstrated that the game of chess helps young people learn to concentrate, think logically, overcome obstacles, spot patterns, and categorize information. It also helps with the development of problem-solving skills, planning, patience, focus of thought and self-discipline. While it is true that chess is a competitive activity, good sportsmanship and fair play are taught as essential elements of the game.
Each and every game will begin and end with a handshake.
The students will learn more than just playing a game in our newly formed chess club. They will experience the thrill of competition and learn to practice great social interactions.
