Members of our chess club vary from year to year, but they tend to be students who do not play sports or participate in other extracurricular activities. Chess Club proves to be a home for many of these students, a safe place for them to develop a social life as well as their chess skills, which research has proved helps develop their higher thinking processes and ability to focus.
I have seen some of the more detached and alienated students in my school come alive in chess club.
It's a wonderful sight, one that makes running chess club well worth the time and effort regardless of the outcome at tournaments. There's a reason chess has endured for 1,400 years (see the book The Immortal Game for details)!
My Project
I have loved the game of chess since I was a young boy. I understand firsthand the value of learning the game and all the associated benefits, both intellectually and socially, of playing chess. I have seen students grow tremendously during my seven years directing the chess club.
This infusion of new chess pieces, boards, and clocks would do wonders to stimulate interest in the club, helping me to recruit new players and ensure the club remains a healthy, vital part of our school's culture.
Chess tends to attract the loners and the disengaged students and draw them into the school community.
