Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a school where many of my students have encountered life challenges. Despite these challenges, they have not given up. They are positive even though they have a lot of work ahead of them. The are eager to learn even though for many this is not an easy task. What they really want is to feel part of a community since they are in a new environment and have had to leave their friends and everything that they know behind.
My Project
Our students come to our school from many different schools in the community. Many don't feel like they belong. We do not have any clubs on campus, and this is something that I want to change. I have surveyed our students to see if they were interested in clubs on campus and if so which ones. I was surprised to see how many of our students are interested in Chess and would like to see this brought to our campus. With the purchase of chess boards, we would have the opportunity to bring the first club to our campus, Chess Club. Something so simple would also bring some of our students together that may have never come together before. This would allow our students to feel more like they do belong to our community. Our students are very excited about the possibility of bringing Chess Club to our campus, and it is nice to see them excited about something new.
