I am a third grade teacher at PS 169 in Brooklyn, New York. This school is a Title I school in a lower socio-economic community where 93 percent of the children receive free breakfast and lunch every day. Many of these children are English Language Learners and their parents are immigrants who do not speak the language. Third grade is a transition grade and it can be very tough for children. They are maturing and becoming more independent, and I believe they put a lot of time and effort into their work. It would be wonderful if the children knew they could keep their work forever. A lot of our time is spent on writing in each subject area. I like the children to put together books of their work that they can keep forever. We have made a variety of books this school year. These books included: a collection of personal narratives, a non-fiction book about animals, a recipe book, and a book about the rain forest or desert. We are currently working on a poetry anthology. The children work writing and illustrating their poems. I have a laminating machine in my classroom that the children use to protect their work, but we do not have a binding machine to bind the pages of our books. If we had a binding machine their work would look like a real published book and they could keep it forever. Lakeshore Learning offers a binding machine and plastic binding for a very reasonable rate. This would be a tremendous asset to my classroom. I thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
