ChemScout Badges Create Aspiration In Education

My Project

As a High School Chemistry teacher of over 5 years, I have learned that the ABSOLUTE HARDEST part of being an educator of today's youth and adolescents is not scaffolding the content, differentiating the material, or even organizing a lesson plan for an entire unit, but instead, it is figuring out how to motivate my students to simply WANT to learn and APPLY THEMSELVES at a level where they can understand and generalize the information provided to them in high school. Even with creative ways of developing assignments for my students that are both content related, and connected to the student's personal experiences and interests, being that Chemistry is heavy in content, riddled with advanced math, and has an NYS regents exam at the end of the year, it has been difficult to aspire my students to apply themselves in the superlative fashion that I know they are capable of.

To help my students aspire to bring their A-Game in my Chemistry class, I combined the concept of Boys/Girls Scout Badges (which I call ChemScout Badges) with the learning standards that my students are required to understand throughout each unit, to provide my students with homemade stickers that they earn through a series of tasks related to the standard being learned.

I started this project already with the current students, and all of the kids have gone crazy over the designs of the ChemScout Badges, as well as the process of earning and collecting as many badges (stickers) as they can. Each ChemScout Badge is designed by me and my amazing girlfriend (who is an art teacher) and created using sticker paper, a laser printer, and a Cricut, so your donation will be the catalyst that will inspire student attainment of excellence and greatness in the advanced science of Chemistry.
