My students need beakers, graduated cylinders, test tube holders, tongs and other basic lab equipment to perform experiments in chemistry class.

Students learn science best by doing. In my class, I want students to be able to perform their own experiments using the tools that a chemist uses in a real lab setting.
Our student population is over 95% African-American with the majority living in poverty, qualifying them to receive free or reduced price lunch and breakfast.
The school population is over 1500 students although the school building was designed to house 1200. Class sizes are large with many classes having over 40 students per class. This means access to materials for small groups is very limited.
Donations to this project will provide beakers, graduated cylinders and other materials for students to perform science experiments in chemistry throughout the school year. One chemistry objective asks students to create a heating curve for water. Students need beakers, watch glasses and graduated cylinders to perform this activity. Tongs are also needed to remove the beakers from hot plates. Students also do paper chromatography activities and need the beakers and chromatography paper to complete this activity. While we have a large number of test tubes, we do not have holders or brushes to clean them after lab. Density experiments require the use of beakers, graduated cylinders and scoops to measure chemicals. Throughout the entire course, these materials will allow students to perform with real tools, not just learn content.
Students will gain knowledge and handle the same equipment that a real chemist would use in their lab.
This opens the door and shows that careers as chemists or scientists are something that students might consider themselves in the future.
