Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A day in my chemistry class consists of engaging students with various ability and language barriers. I want to spark the interest of science in my students and want them to become future scientists, engineers and innovators. "Science is more than a school subject, or the periodic table" Pres. Obama.
My students consist of tenth and eleventh graders who come from various academic backgrounds, ELLs, Spec-ed.
They are passionate about learning but at times are afraid of failure. Being in an urban school district with limited resources doesn't define their academic success. They are intelligent and given the chemistry lab resources, they can again become interested and passionate about science and have fun learning the theories and conducting experiments.
My Project
There are essential chemistry lab experiments that every student must conduct to have a better understanding about the concepts and theories. Students will learn about four types of chemical reactions: synthesis, decomposition, single displacement and double displacement. The seven chemistry kits requested in this project will provide visual aid and hands on experience for the students. Students will have access to demonstrations: like a salt to a flame experiment, demonstrations with dry ice kit, flameless ration heaters kit, milk of magnesia rainbow demonstration kit as well as elephant toothpaste demonstration kit. With "hands-on- experiments", students will understand the concepts of hypothesis, theoretical model and taxonomic category. Students build on their critical thinking, problem solving, application, analysis, synthesis cognitive abilities.
My students currently have access to textbooks and there isn't any funding to order chemistry lab resources.
This project will change the lives of over 100 students who are currently taking my chemistry classes. They have will be able to apply the concepts that they learn in lectures, textbooks by conducting experiments. They will build confidence, strength and passion for critical thinking and cognitive learning. They will move one step closer to becoming a global citizen.
